What is a “Sport?” – Change My Mind
Welcome to Simple Joe. I’m glad you’re here.
In today’s episode, I start with the idea that Earth is the only planet in our solar system whose English name does not come from Greek or Roman mythology, and I have a little fun with the fact that our name basically means “dirt”. In contrast, all the other planets get fancy god names. I share the weather for Las Vegas, Nevada, and my hometown, Cincinnati, along with a quick story about never having been to Las Vegas or really spending time in a casino. I walk through birthdays for Bobby Allison, Ozzy Osbourne, Daryl Hannah, Julianne Moore, Katarina Witt, Brendan Fraser, and Amanda Seyfried, then touch on key historical events like Illinois becoming the 21st state, the first modern neon lamp, the tragic The Who concert stampede in Cincinnati, and the very first SMS text message. I also talk about Make a Gift Day, Let’s Hug Day, and National Green Bean Casserole Day, including my strong opinions on how green bean casserole should be made. For Wildcard Wednesday, I roll out a “Change My Mind” segment on what really counts as a sport, walk through my three specific criteria, test a bunch of activities against them, and invite listeners into the debate. I wrap up by reminding you to focus on making memories with the people you love, because memories are better than stuff.
What is a Sport?
- There must be a clear, objective score that does not depend on judges or opinion.
- Something must be thrown, struck, or tossed as a central part of the activity.
- There must be credible potential for injury that is a normal, accepted, and sometimes strategic part of how the game is played.
